Phnom Penh and beautiful islands

27.06.2014

As we arrived in Phnom Penh I was surprised. After Vientiane I expected some French architecture and something’s the Cambodian’s built up again after the Red Khmer. But I found myself in a modern metropolitan city. After our stuff was stored in a room we walked around and I soon decided to change my plan to leave the next day – I wanted to have a night out in this pulsating city. I talked to 3 English boys in the evening to share a Tuk-Tuk to the killing fields the next morning. As I have been super tired I just quickly talked to my beloved ‘full moon team’ and went to bed. In the morning of the 13th we 4 left to the historical place near Phnom Penh known as the ‘killing fields’. It is exactly that.

The regime of the Red Khmer killed here hundreds of ‘regime enemies’ with tools and buried them in mass graves. With my German background I have to say, I never visited such places back in Germany and I felt from my first day in Cambodia very touched by the brutal and sad history most of Cambodians still carry. The visit was very intense and after we also saw the Red Khmer prison ‘S21’  we needed something to make our moods a bit lighter again. Burgers and some shopping helped. I used the low Dollar course to buy myself a backup camera (as mine didn´t survived the wet jungle that good) and gift – a GoPro. In the evening I forced the boys to take me out. They have been 7 years younger than me and worked the last 6 weeks at the Tubing in Vang Vieng. But… I made it and we had a good time dancing and late in the night seeing Spain losing their first match. After two hours sleep I took the morning bus to Shinoukville in order to get the last ferry to Koh Rong, an island a lot of people recommended me to go. As I bought my ticket, I saw they offer some diving, so I booked one deep dive for the next morning. Koh Rong is an upcoming island with a lot of wild party and beautiful beaches.

Koh Rong

I had a good and quick day and left with my things the morning of the 15th. My deep dive was a pretty bad trip and for the first time I was very happy to be on the boat again. Good that I booked just one dive. The boat dropped me off at Koh Rong Salolem. I don´t want to tell much about my one day in this little paradise, let´s just say I met a very special girl and had perfect quite time, which I wanted and needed. My stay could not have been better.  The 4pm boat took me back to t main land where I got the ‘floor space’ for 18 USD in the night bus to my last destination: Siem Reap. There I had a day to order my things and waited for one half of the ‘full moon team’: Lucas. I was very happy that we could make it to meet again. So happy, that it got to happen two of the most crazy days of my life. I give you some words: Sunrise, Angkor at Angkor, shopping, Happy Pizza, happy Lucas happy Kathrin, cheap beer, cheap Mojito, sleep? (What is that???). (Thanks Lucas, I will NOT tell my children this stories :P )

I enjoyed the crazy days so much that I got confused with the time… I left with a night bus to Bangkok on the 19th – I planned to sit in the ferry to Koh Tao at this point. But plans are made to change… About this plan, I don´t know if you remember but India took some strange from me at some point. As well there was no possibility to make more adventure dives, so I decided back than to visit Dani, which I met on the way to Malaysia with Luisa. So I would give myself some holiday before I fly home and go for some diving, at least finish my advanced license. As well I just recently I needed some days off from rushing through Cambodia (in order to have these days left) and the intense days in Siem Reap. I could feel how hard they have been as I arrived at the 20th in Bangkok, went to Maurice’s to get some things, back to Koa San Road with wet cloth, just in time for the night bus tacking me to the ferry in the early morning. The same way I was already doing with Luisa in April. I arrived, decided for a diving school, going out as it was Saturday on Koh Tao and again going to bed at 5am, as Germany played. Waking up and going to a wreck and fun dive. So I could feel in the evening what I did to my body. I woke up with a cold. But the weather was too bad on Monday anyway for my night dive. So I did it on the 24th. Nice experience but not good for a cold. The rest of my stay I got tattoos, relaxed with a book on the beach, saw the island, found a little paradise again, did a bucket with Daniel and left to Bangkok in the night to the 27th. Last shopping, massage with Maurice, packing things, last 7eleven sandwich and I´m sitting with a cold in the airplane to Istanbul right now.
